In 1978, Norman Foster completed a shop for the clothing chain Joseph on a prominent corner site in London. In keeping with the supermarket aesthetic then dominant, its interiorwas in full view of passers-by. Garments were hung without ceremony on standardized racks behind a large expanse of plate glass. Within the next ten years, all this was to change.
