Rio de Janeiro developed on lowlands, landfilled marshes, and hillsides. Today, its six million inhabitants (twelve million in the metropolitan area) live in diverse neighborhoods in shacks, low houses, and skyscrapers interlaced in a gradually sprawling megalopolis.
