ENCLAVES AND COUNTER-ENCLAVES (IN BRAZILIAN HOUSING FILM, AND ART)

Cities in Brazil now have two distinctive and defining enclaves: favelas ("informal" settlements) and condo -mínios (gated residential buildings). One avoids the rest of the city, and the other is avoided by it.Condomínios are set up at points of abundant infrastructure, whereas favelas have none. They are favelas because they have no sewer systems, streets, planning, and addresses. They are like stains in the urban fabric occupied by people who devise their own services and structures far from any planned order. They create vibrating systems full of collisions, disjunctures, and disorder.
