Double Acting Tankers contracted

A first contract for the construction of two double acting tankers was placed recently by Finnish Fortum Group with Japanese Sumitomo Heavy Industries. In heavy ice the tanker sails stern ahead and in free waters on higher speed bow ahead. The decision of Fortum Shipping to acquire two icebreaking 106.000 tdw crude oil carriers from the Japanese Sumitomo Heavy Industries, which contract was signed on June 30th, 2000, in Helsinki, means simultaneously a major breakthrough for the Kvaerner Masa-Yards-developed double-acting tanker (DAT) concept.
