Building facilities of German yards

German yards are able to build floating units up to 420 m length, 85 m width and 8 m draft. In former times these dimensions were typical for extreme large tankers of around 500,000 tdw. But these times are over: Today smaller units of higher sophistication are under construction. The largest building dock by far is still operated by Howaldtswerke- Deutsche Werft AG(HDW) in Kiel. It is 426 m long, 88,24 m wide and 8.70 m deep. Originally it was constructed in the early seventies to build at that time futuristic giant tankers of up to 500,000 tdw (Loa = 405 m, B = 71 m, H = 29 m, loading capacity 480,000 t).
