Not only in container business, but also in breakbulk and project markets, there is an intense competition among European seaports. Antwerp aims to preserve its market leading position. In order to attract additional volumes, the port is enhancing its activitities in the Eastern and Central European hinterland as well as in the U.S. through a cooperation agreement with the major hub Houston. Europe's biggest seaport Rotterdam tries to close the gap to Antwerp at least a bit by presenting itself as a very good alternative especially in the market for super heavy lift cargoes. In the Southwest of the continent, the Spanish container hub Algeciras at the Strait of Gibraltar hopes to atract substantial breakbulk cargoes too. A major advantage is the integration of the port in TEN-T rail project of the EU, the port authority hopes.
