About 1,912 newbuildings with nearly 25 million GT and close to 15 million kW engine power have been delivered till the end of 1997. This is the highest peak since more than two decades. Nearly all vessels are powered by diesel engines: more than 70 % working as two-and the remaining close to 30% as four-stroke Diesel engines. Keeping this in mind the market shares can be split mainly between MAN B&W (44 %), Waertsilae NSD (26%) and Mitsubishi (7%), summarized already to 77%. The other 23% have to be divided between more than ten companies of which MTU (3,5%), Pielstick (3%) and Caterpil-lar/MaK (combined 5,6%) seem to have the highest shares. But anyhow two-stroke Diesel engines dominate the market by around 70%, calculated in kW. Only three producers are known here (MAN B&W, Wartsila NSD and Mitsibishr), and that is why their market shares ip the combined figures are so extremely high.
