Weavers tend to see the world around them differently from other folks. We look for patterns in bathroom tiles, study pastoral landscapes for colors we can use in our next handwoven, and lose track of the dialogue in a film because we're too busy looking at the fabrics in the costumes. Director Peter Jackson's first two film presentations of The Lord of the Rings trilogy are visual feasts. Costume designer Ngila Dickson makes full use of hand-woven fabrics both in the characters' garments and in the background props. Textile techniques aren't limited to just handweaving, either; also included are quilting, applique, beading, embroidery, knitting, and trapunto, to name a few.
