At this stage in the year, it goes without saying that the global ground handling industry is facing its most challenging and unpredictable period to date, with various handlers reporting business at an all-time low. Mete Erna, General Manager of Havas Ground Handling, provides an update from Turkey. "Since the last quarter of 2019, in parallel with the other service providers in the industry, we have experienced a dramatic decrease in passenger and cargo traffic figures of up to 95% when the COVID-19 pandemic reached the peak level for the first wave." The safety of staff and passengers subsequently became the priority for the entire industry to ensure business continuity, he continues. "We are still suffering from the uncertainty caused by the pandemic in the European markets and we are managing our business with quick action rather than long term plans due to frequently changing government measures across the Europe."
