The Interior Department turned toxic for Mary Hinson, a high-climber twice decorated for valor. Adept on the rocks, Hinson joined the National Park Service in 1993 as a seasonal ranger at Yosemite National Park. The department lauded her job performance, honored her for cliffhanging rescues and promoted her to head a unique law enforcement agency. And all the while, Hinson says, she endured discriminatory behavior. "Throughout my career within the Department of Interior, I witnessed and experienced discrimination based on my gender," Hinson told E&E News. "As one of few female law enforcement rangers, and one of the first female law enforcement supervisors, I was repeatedly harassed, intimidated, bullied, persecuted and publicly humiliated by my subordinates and supervisors."
