A man who left his wallet at an Antarctic research base has gotten it back 53 years later. Paul Grisham worked as a meteorologist with the Navy at the McMurdo Station on Ross Island for just over a year. "It was called Operation Deep Freeze," he said. "We were supposed to provide support to civilian scientists working at the base." At the end of his Antarctic tour, he served the Navy for two more years aboard an aircraft carrier during the Vietnam War. Grisham went on to retire in San Diego, and before the coronavirus pandemic worked as a docent aboard the USS Midway. Grisham, who is now 91, didn't know his wallet had been left behind in the Antarctic. In 2014, a demolition crew discovered it behind a locker while updating McMurdo Station. The wallet eventually found its way to Bruce McKee, the founder and director of an organization that serves U.S. veterans, who was able to find and contact Grisham. "It's not often that you get to reunite somebody with their wallet after 53 years," McKee said.
