NPS eyes Bush home, Japanese internment camp as new sites

The National Park Service has launched studies that could lead to the creation of two new park sites: former President George W. Bush's childhood home in Midland, Texas, and Camp Amache in Granada, Colo., where more than 7,000 Japanese-Americans were imprisoned during World War II. A designation on either site could still be years away, but NPS officials in Denver have started the planning and will take public testimony on the proposals until February. Congress ordered the studies last year as part of its John D. Dingell Jr. Conservation, Management and Recreation Act, a legislative package that included more than 100 bills (Greenwire, Feb. 15, 2019). The George W. Bush Childhood Home, built in 1939, is touted as the only house in the nation that has been home to two presidents (Bush and his father, the late George H.W. Bush), two governors (George W. Bush and his brother Jeb Bush) and a first lady (George H.W. Bush's wife, the late Barbara Bush). It's now a museum and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. When the Bushes bought the house in 1951, George W. Bush was only 5 years old. The family lived there for four years while the elder Bush established himself in the Texas oil industry.
