EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler announced that the agency would postpone in-person events for Earth Day and celebrate via online activities, according to an internal email obtained by E&E News. "This year, I encourage EPA employees to serve as an example to others and show how we can still celebrate 50 years of progress from the safety of our homes," Wheeler said in a video message embedded in the email. Before social distancing restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic, EPA had planned cleanup events on April 22, which marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the agency. Wheeler has extended telework for EPA employees until April 30 (Greenwire, March 31). As an alternative to the original plans, Wheeler's video encouraged employees to celebrate "by creating your own Earth Day inspired artwork to display in your window." Using hashtags #EarthDayAtHome, #EarthDay2020 and #EPAat50, employees can share their artwork and photos of their celebrations on social media, Wheeler wrote. His email also mentioned the launch of a website selling EPAat50 merchandise. T-Shirts, sweatshirts, tote bags, reusable water bottles and mugs with the phrase "Progress for a Stronger Future" on each item are available for purchase.
