The New York Air National Guard's 109th Airlift Wing departed yesterday on a trek to Antarctica, supporting icelossresearch in the coldest part of the world.This is the first Antarctica mission for the New York Air National Guard's 2019-2020 support season, but for 32years the 109th Airlift Wing has transported medical supplies, scientists and fuel for the U.S. Antarctic Program'sresearch center at McMurdo Station.The research the National Guard is supporting in Antarctica will help scientists understand and predict thepotential impact of melting southern glaciers on sea-level rise and, ultimately, real infrastructure needs in coastalcities.
