P. Sean Brotherton's Revolutionary medicine: health and the body in post-Soviet Cuba represents an important contribution to an emergent anthropological literature on the Cuban State in the post-1990 era. On the basis of ethnographic research carried out in Havana over the course of roughly a decade (1998 2010), Brotherton utilises the health care system and its dynamic interactions with individuals to understand the contradictions between a continued official emphasis on socialist principles and a new reality of expanding social differentiation. In his analysis, health care organisation and infrastructure have evolved in concert with a reconfiguration of the Cuban State and citizenry, producing an ever more complex web of state power, professional strategies and bodily practices.
