January 2006's issue of BATE reported on "The Business Side of Bird Flu." With US President Bush's release of the Implementation Plan for the National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza in May 2006, it's time for an update. While humans continue to develop virus-fighting vaccines, viruses continue to evolve into forms new to our species. Over the 20th century, three pandemic battles have been waged. Bush's implementation plan asserts that these events resulted in illness in approximately 30% of the world population and death in 0.2% to 2% of those infected.
