Every organization-big or small, formal or informal-needs digital policies. Although smaller organizations probably need not worry about how to implement digital policies with employees on different continents and in different time zones, they do need to make informed decisions about how to conduct themselves online. Going through the digital policy development process will encourage organizational leaders to think about those decisions ahead of time-rather than in the middle of a crisis.Many large organizations are already used to working within a policy framework, even if it addresses general HR or business policies rather than digital issues. But a lot of organizations-particularly startups, or those that still operate like startups-can't relate to such a formal structure.An organization that doesn't even have a policy on absenteeism cannot be expected to produce a formal digital policy repository, complete with schema and policy retirement protocols. That would be like asking a student to go from kindergarten to post-graduate studies overnight. An organization needs a much more practical approach to digital policies. It's important to plug the huge holes that can sink the ship, before building a comprehensive digital policy program.
