EFFORT TO SUSPEND CALIFORNIA'S GHG LAW FACES UPHILL BATTLE

California voters appear to be skeptical of a ballot proposition that would suspend the state's greenhouse gas law, according to a Field Poll released late last week. Proposition 23, which has been funded mainly by fossil fuel interests, was only supported by 36 percent of those polled, compared with 48 percent who said they would vote against the proposition. However, the 39 percent that had heard of the proposition split nearly evenly, with 44 percent for compared with 45 percent against. Those who hadn't heard of it and were told a summary of what the proposition did went 50 percent against it. The poll was dismissed by supporters of the proposition, who said the poll had been misleading in its description of their effort. "The Field Poll's approach in this survey is disappointing," said John Kabateck, a co-chair of the Prop. 23 campaign. "Prop. 23 merely requires the temporary suspension of climate change regulations that would put over a million California jobs at risk and cost families and small businesses billions of dollars in higher energy costs."
