It is often said there's nothing new under the sun. At first glance, that expression seems perfectly suited to the current state of offset technology. On closer inspection, once-promising technologies are being revisited and revived by trends and issues that are very much a part of our twenty-first century world. With the historical motivator of quality now addressed, increasing environmental regulation has become the key trend driving offset technology today, followed by a long list that includes increased competition, demand for multicolor printing, shorter press runs, and a shrinking pool of skilled operators.
