The management of historical garden facilities is quite a critical affair. In some cases a sensitive redesign seems to be more honest and effective than an unreflecting reconstruction. The more damaged or fragmented they have become, the more problems arise from conflicting interests, and the harder it is to argue for reconstruction let alone vouch for historical authenticity. On the other hand a redesign is not in place where a preservation approach is feasible and obvious to the layman. Based on an investigation of nine examples the author probes into where to draw the line and what guideline principles can be inferred for future cases. Above all, he criticises historicist imitations, and calls for the preservation of old substance while at the same time taking account of the modern environment on the basis of an expert's report and a careful weighing of all the considerations involved.%Wann sind moderne Neugestaltungen in historischen Gartenanlagen sinnvoll, und welche Kriterien müssen dabei beachtet werden?
