Parc Central de Nou Barris

The city region Nou Barris on the eastern edge of Barcelona is comprised of various city quarters which were joined together to form the 8-kilometer square area. Since the components have no common urban history the area lacks its own identity. The situation improved with the con- struction of a ring road in 1992 connecting Nou Barris to the city. The city then commissioned the office of Andreu Arriola and Carme Fiol, to realize their design for the second-largest park in Barcelona. By integrating a park into the region the city hoped to unify the area and weave it into the urban fabric. The architects chose the inner courtyard of the walled-in Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau as the nucleus of their design scheme. The concept used Picasso's paintings of La Horta de Sant Joan as its point of departure to form a new geometric landscape out of the buildings, open spaces and green spaces present. The result is a well-received landscape of 1,500 trees, plank timber bridges to traverse areas on different levels and lakes, and a rich variety of paving materials and colors.%Barcelona ist als Laboratorium für außergewöhnliche Architektur und bedeutenden Städtebau bekannt. Bis in die jüngste Zeit lenken Projekte die Aufmerksamkeit in Richtung der katalanischen Metropole - Projekte, die Architektur, Stadtplanung und Landschaftsarchitektur mit öffentlicher Kunst und technischer Infrastruktur verbinden. Hier werden neue urbane Blickpunkte auf die (Stadt-) Landschaft eröffnet. Barcelona repräsentiert eine fortwährende und konstruktive Debatte über die Verbindung von Grünraum, Design und Kultur. Ein aktuelles Beispiel dafür ist der im Jahre 2003 fertig gestellte Parc Central in Nou Barris. Der Parc Central de Nou Barris ist ein großes urbanes Projekt, eine entscheidende Intervention an der östlichen Peripherie von Barcelona. Nou Barris selbst ist ein Stadtteil Barcelonas ohne eigene Identität. Verschiedene Viertel wurden zu einem über acht Quadratkilometer großen Stadtteil zusammengeschlossen. Ein nachbarschaftliches Verhältnis unter den Bewohnern konnte sich nie entwickeln, da sie keine gemeinsame Stadtgeschichte verbindet. Der öffentliche Raum des Viertels wurde aus Angst vor Kriminalität nicht genutzt.
