Im Berliner Barnim entsteht eine neue Landschaft, in der die Landwirtschaft weiter eine große Rolle spielt. Strukturen der Rieselfelder, technische Bauwerke als Blickpunkte und Sichtachsen tragen ebenfalls zu dieser Landschaft bei.%In the summer of 1994 the expanse of land at Barnim, on the outskirts of Berlin, was professionally evaluated for open space development. A classic landscape park design, requiring high maintenance, could not be considered for the space measuring 1,400 hectares. Three competitions were conducted between 1996 and 2000. The first of the chosen designs, entitled "New Meadows," by Schirmer & Kernbach, is comprised of a 700-meter-long continuous band of urban parks. The second design by Atelier Loidl entitled "Falkenberg" emphasizes existing elements in the landscape. "Wartenberger Feldmark," by plancontext, outlines its site with a band of woods, creating a unified space while deviating from typical landscape park vocabulary. It is important to keep classic landscape park design principles in mind more for their meaning than for their elements. Here, current preoccupation with interpreting the term "picturesque" includes striving to create landscape images that incorporate specific views, such as experienced in Mies' Barcelona Pavil-lion, rather than purely painterly designs.
