In Pesaro and Ancona along the Adriatic coast of northern Italy, two restoration projects of Jewish cemeteries have reconnected them to their surrounding landscapes. The grounds of the Jewish cemetery in Pesaro, established in the late 17th century, were primarily a meadow with few trees on a sloping, hilly site. Over centuries the site became overgrown with vegetation. The landscape architects used the wildness of the site as design inspiration. Only the gravestones and paths were cleared of growth. The poetic atmosphere is underscored by the steps and wooded paths which connect the gravestone groupings. The architects of the Jewish Cemetery in Ancona chose to restore the original form of the cemetery as a vast meadow. Founded in the 16th century and inaccessible to visitors since the 19th century, the cemetery can now be recognized in its entirety. A path ringing the circumference connects the cemetery to the surrounding nature preserve, Parco del Cardeto, and emphasizes the site as a whole. The enclosing wall consists partially of metal netting and partially of a wall from the 19th century which was restored.%In den vergangenen Jahren wurden an der Küste Mittelitaliens, in Ancona und in Pesaro, zwei jüdische Friedhöfe saniert, die jeweils Bezug auf die umgebende Landschaft nehmen.
