It was first thought of by Henry II and has had since a varied history from Georgian splendour to being used as a recreation ground for the general public in the early 20th century. Some seventy years later, the decline of the mining industry led to measures that improved the area and then restored the garden to its former glory. The English landscape gardener Tom Stuart-Smith created a masterpiece by planting herbaceous perennials of Mediterranean origin in keeping with the Italian model and creating a layout inspired by the river Trent and its tributaries. Many other features attract visitors from all walks of life and more projects are planned.
