As a "living memorial" for John F. Kennedy, the Center for the Performing Arts takes an active position among the great presidential monuments of the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials. We envision the expansion of the building to fuse with the landscape and river, instead of being an appendage object. The new 57,000 sf addition takes the form of three pavilions-the Entry Pavilion, the Glissando Pavilion, and the Potomac Pavilion. The Potomac Pavilion provides public access to the river-an original ideal of the very first center designs in 1959.
