This Folk Art Museum stands on the Xiangshan campus of China Academy of Arts, the center of China's art education. The site is on a small hill of a former tea plantation. By composing the structure as a single gigantic slope, we wanted to avoid having to interfere with the sloping terrain and leave the hill as is, and embed the building into the landscape. We were able to construct such a gentle, flexible structure by gradually shifting a collection of small roofs over a slope that snakes up the hill. By designing the roofs in units of flat parallelograms, we were able to make the structure smoothly follow the intricate topography.
