This is a monumental skyscraper that was constructed before the handover of Hong Kong. The building was built by Foster, who was one of the driving forces of high-tech architecture along with Piano and Rogers; the architect had been allowed to expend an unusually high construction cost for this project. The building is a crystallization of the philosophy and aesthetics of high-tech architecture: each function was divided into units, fabricated to the last detail, with factory-produced parts that were efficiently assembled on site. From the visible exterior superstructure that supports the volume to the toilet units and staircases, everything was completely custom-made and consolidated in one piece.
