The present special issue of Fuzzy Sets and Systems is composed of papers presented at two special sessions of the Eight International Conference on Fuzzy Set Theory and Applications (FSTA), which was held in Liptovsky Jan, Slovakia, from January 30 till February 3, 2006. The issue will appear in two parts of approximately equal sizes; the first part is what you are reading now. Roughly along the lines of both special sessions, papers contained in this issue can be divided into two groups.
