U.s. Fusion Program Head Quits

Ray Fonck, head of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Fusion Energy Sciences, announced his resignation after only 17 months on the job. August 1 was his last day in office. He has returned to his teaching and research position as a professor at the University of Wisconsin. Fonck became head of the U.S. fusion program in March 2007 to fill the post vacated by the retirement of N. Anne Davies in April 2006. He was on a leave of absence from the University of Wisconsin that was expected to last two years. The reasons for his abrupt departure have not been disclosed.
