The analysis of cardiovascular oscillations has substantially improved risk stratification and treatment of several diseases with autonomic or cardiac dysfunction. The clinical use of Holter ECG and of the standard approach to heart rate variability (HRV) was facilitated by the Task Force guidelines published in 1996. Today, analysis of HRV is a widely used clinical practice and a huge literature reflects the medical importance of the standard approach. Furthermore, methods of analysis have since been developed, leading to novel successful approaches that are not yet systematised. Thus, the potential capabilities of existing methods for analysing heart rate, as well as blood pressure and respiratory signals, have not been realised in clinical practice.
