Smart labels based on radio frequency identifi-cation (RFID) technology are not new; such labels in a variety of frequencies and form factors have been available for several years. What is new is the current mandate-inspired flurry of activity in which the focus is on longer-read-range UHF labels based on the Electronic Prod-uct Code (EPC) standard. Smart labels are also about to be placed on a wider variety of items and surfaces, in much higher volumes than ever before.
