UCC: Conflicting Roles, Mixed Reviews

The 2004 U Connect Conference opened on May 25 in Anaheim, Calif., with a flurry of announcements that indicated that the Uniform Code Council (UCC) and its business units—EPCglobal, UCC-net, RosettaNet, UNSPSC, and eBusiness Ready—are alive and well and moving forward with the standards business. Unfortunately, the news hasn't all been positive. The recent resignations of Dicki Lulay, president of EPCglobal U.S., and Margaret Fitzgerald, president of EPCglobal International, have raised leadership questions. These latest events add weight to mounting criticism from both vendors and users that the UCC is slow moving and unresponsive. Businesses committed to and dependent on the UCC's enterprise standards to improve their operations and profit margins, as well as to maintain relationships with retail and government trading partners, have to wonder what they can expect from this family of standards bodies.
