The investigation aims to reveal the extent of quinoline biodegradation at two concentrations by the white rot fungus, Pleurotus ostratus BP, in four different growth media (potato sucrose liquid medium (PSLM), synthetic liquid medium (SLM), corn straw extract liquid medium (CSLM), and rice straw solid medium (RSSM)). The relationships among the biodegradation process of quinoline, laccase activity and biomass were also investigated. When the initial concentrations of quinoline were 150 and 250 mg/L, our results indicated that 97.40% and 94.37% of quinoline were biodegraded in RSSM during 15 days of incubation. However, the depletion of quinoline by white rot fungus only could reach a maximum of 77.5% in the other 3 media. The results also indicated that the concentration of quinoline could influence the secretion of enzymes, fungal growth and quinoline biodegradation. As quinoline could not completely biodegraded via enzymatic attack, the white rot fungus must have other mechanisms for quinoline bio-degradation. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) revealed that quinoline could be mineralized in RSSM, whereas intermediates of quinoline were produced in the other three media.
