In the epilogue of The Rain on Macy's Parade, author Jeffrey Trachtenberg walks through Macy's fabled flag-ship Manhattan store. What he finds is a mixed bag: lonely outposts of glitz in designer departments but dust and an acute lack of personnel elsewhere. True, the world's largest store ain't what it used to be, but actually it's a small miracle (on 34th Street) that Macy's—or indeed many of its competitors—exists at all today.
