Production Efficiency and Productivity Growth in Norwegian Sawmilling

Production efficiency of Norwegian sawmilling was examined using Data Envelopment Analysis. The analysis was carried out on an extensive panel data set, including about 200 sawmills during the period 1974 to 1991. Productivity growth throughout the period was investigated using the Malmquist productivity index. The results indicate that approximately 30% of the sawmills were producing efficiently when assuming constant returns to scale. Estimated production growth approximated 1% per year.
