The president, who is also commander-in-chief of the armed forces, is the supreme military authority in Cameroon, but the defense minister makes routine decisions.rnThe Cameroon armed forces include 14,100 active-duty personnel spread across the three service branches: Army, Navy, and Air Force. These forces are supported by a paramilitary group, the gendarmerie, which totals approximately 9,000 in number.rnArmy. The Army totals 12,500 personnel and is deployed over three military regions, with one battalion assigned to each regional command. Other formations include six infantry battalions (one a training unit), and one each of the following battalions: PresidentialrnGuard, airborne/commando, armored reconnaissance, and engineer. There is also one artillery battalion with five batteries, one anti-aircraft battalion with six batteries, and support units for the HQ regiments.
