Overview: Security Environment. Sudan's security environment is characterized by the interplay of internal conflict and the country's role in stoking animosity between Khartoum and its neighboring states. Sudan is currently embroiled in three different conflicts: the international humanitarian crisis in Darfur, the actions of the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) in South Sudan, and a brewing rebellion in the east. At the core of these conflicts is the ethnically and religiously segregated nature of the nation, and the ability of the Sudanese government to continue to maintain control over its vast territory to maximize the value of its economic mainstay - oil.
