Market Status. Mali's plans for the modernization of the country's armed forces have been derailed by a shortage of funds. Its force structure is rapidly aging and is loaded with weapons systems purchased in the late 1960s and early 1970s, mostly from the Soviet Union. It is doubtful much of this equipment is still active, especially the more complex systems. However, some of the military's needs may be filled as a result of its growing relationship with the U.S. Mali has been cooperating with the U.S. in the global war on terror, and the U.S. is now treating the West African nation as an important political and military ally in the region.
