"Timmy is the Phil Mickelson of disc golf," observes the spectator standing next to me. "Two good rounds, one bad one." He's referring to Timmy Gill, a strapping 28-year-old all-American kid from Minnesota who has never won a major tournament in his eight years as a touring professional disc golfer. He has come close, though, like the time at the Minnesota Majestic when he blew first place in the final round, or when he lost the play-off for the final nine at the Brent Hambrick in Columbus, Ohio. Here at the Discraft Memorial in Scottsdale, Arizona, the first big event of the 2004 season, he has held first place for two days. But now, late in the third, his advantage has narrowed to just three strokes ahead of last year's world cham-pion, Barry Schultz.
