For years cardiologist steven Nissen was a friend to the drug industry, as he looked for new technologies to speed heart drugs to market. Then in February 2001 the Food & Drug Administration called him to help analyze data on a new painkiller—Vioxx. Six months later he concluded the pill caused heart attacks. Merck yanked Vioxx from pharmacy shelves in 2004.
