HSBC's conservative approach continues to pay off. In February 2007 the London banking giant became the first to take a significant writedown for bad mortgagernloans. As the financial crisis deepens, HSBC is hanging in, avoiding government help and instead planning to raise $18.2 billion in a rights issue this year. While HSBC's North American operations lost $15.5 billion in 2008, the company posted a worldwide profit of $19.9 billion.
