Musically, janis joplin prayed for a Mercedes-Benz. In reality she drove a Porsche-just like all her friends. Next month her 1965 Porsche 356c 1600 Cabriolet will be auctioned in New York by RM Sotheby's. When Joplin bought the car in 1968 it was, fittingly, "pearl white," but the singer (who died two years later) had roadie Dave Richards give it a psychedelic paint job. The car has a presale estimate of $400,000, but that would still put it miles behind the $2.3 million (an inflation-adjusted $5.1 million) fetched three decades ago by John Lennon's trippy 1965 Rolls-Royce Phantom Ⅴ.
