"THE TIMES ARE more and more difficult," laments Thomas Peterffy, a pioneer of digital trading on Wall Street. For four decades, starting in 1977, his low-cost, digitized market making enabled him to squeeze tiny margins out of tens of millions of daily transactions. But with traders far faster than they used to be, Peterffy announced last month that he's closing part of his market-making firm, Timber Hill. It will soon make a market only in stocks; he plans to shutter its options business.
