Liu jiren never planned on being a businessman. In fact, he used to abhor them for their perceived dishonesty and penchant for talking shop. A former university professor with an intellectual's disdain for making money, he is now the millionaire chief executive of one of Chinas early technology stars, Neusoft. The computer-applications Ph.D's road-to-Damascus conversion came after a year's research stint at what was then the U.S. National Bureau of Standards. Impressed by the win-win links between industry and academia at its Maryland campus, he returned to China in 1987 determined to replicate what he had witnessed. A year later Liu, then 33 years old, gave up a promising (and secure) academic career, and with just $4,000 and a rundown classroom for an office, entered the country's embryonic private sector. Eighteen years later his company has more than 8,000 employees and a market value of $435 million.
