An ongoing investigation. Last October, I started working as an investigator on the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (PSI) for Senator Susan Collins of Maine. I selected this position so that I could work exclusively on issues related to food safety. Over the last eight months, I have learned a considerable amount about the way our food supply is regulated in part by consulting with the General Accounting Office (GAO) on the subject. GAO provides assistance to committees principally by reviewing executive branch programs through independent audits, investigations, and evaluations. Reports of their findings contribute to the background information necessary for hearings, and GAO experts frequently testify.
