If any equipment or furniture might come into contact with food, it should be 'food grade'. So what is food grade stainless steel? There are many types of stainless steel labelled by grade numbers and it important to understand the difference between the grades as they vary when it comes to food hygiene. For food, 304 grade steel is an austenitic stainless steel with added nickel and is recognised for providing the optimum balance between hygiene and cost. It is a versatile stainless steel, which is in large part, down to the fact that it can be formed and welded with successful results.
