The first thing you notice when you meet Hamish Renton, the new md of Uniq's Paignton desserts site, is his energy. And given that he has been tasked with improving the site's fortunes, he's going to need it. 2005 was a pretty bad year for Uniq's UK operation, blighted by job cuts and poor performances, sending the group's profits S70m into the red. Now, under the direction of new chief executive Geoff Eaton, and in a bid to turn things around, the UK division has returned to stand alone business units, with dedicated mds at each site - which is where Renton comes in. Renton joined Uniq from Tesco last November, where he was head of own-label, health and diet. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge about healthy eating (he is the author of the GI Guide), along with plans to expand the six-acre site, build customer relations and empower staff.
