Food manufacturers will have to up their game on traceability in future as the European Commission (EC) seeks to tighten up current rules, standards body GS1 UK has predicted. As incidents such as melamine and sudan-1 highlighted, the 'one up one down' requirement for traceability enshrined in EU general food law was woefully inadequate, said GS1 UK programme manager Steve Watson.
