US firms Emergent Technologies and Plastic Technologies are packaging snacks in the base of a plastics drinks bottle. "We wanted to give brand owners the opportunity to market a single serving of two compatible products, such as milk and cookies, within one portable container," explained Emergent president Bill Weber. The two-compartment polyethylene terephthalate pack has been dubbed the Smiler - on the basis of reactions to it. Plastic Technologies helped resolve the challenges of blow-moulding a base cavity deep enough to house the second product. The concept is said to suit vending.
