THE RESTAURANTS BOOK: ETHNOGRAPHIES OF WHERE WE EAT

Motivated by the enthusiastic response to a call for conference papers on "Restaurants," David Beriss and David Sutton compiled this edited volume of mostly anthropological studies of eating establishments. As the editors rightly point out, ethnographies of restaurants are not especially numerous, making this book an important addition to such scholarship. Treating restaurants as "ideal total social phenomena for our postmodern world," this book seeks to address how and why restaurants have gained such great significance in our lives (12).
